Joel Halpern

Joel, a 4th generation kama?a¯ina born on Oahu, moved to Hilo in 1987. His youth in Hilo was filled with soccer, surfing, farming, and exploring the active lava fields of Kilauea. After graduating from Hilo High, Joel pursued degrees in Geology, Music, and Fine Arts at the University of Hawaii.

In 2001, he seized the opportunity to move to New York City through a UHH student exchange program with Hunter College to pursue a career in writing and directing. After 11 years away, Joel returned to Hawai?i Island in 2012, where his family had relocated to Volcano. There, at 4000ft elevation, he founded the world's first commercial Ohelo berry farm, a unique endeavor due to the plant's endemic nature and absence in commercial cultivation. Despite lacking formal agriculture education, Joel's determination and 'green thumb' drove the success of his farm. Today, he runs the world's first commercial Ohelo berry farm, spotlighted in Japan Airlines magazine. He also produces various hand-crafted Ohelo berry products, such as jam, salsa, salad dressing, and hot sauce, available at select establishments across the island.

Joel now applies his unwavering passion and tenacity to the dynamic world of real estate. Collaborating closely with his mother, Pat Halpern RB-16144, a seasoned veteran with over three decades of experience in the field, Joel is poised to bring a fresh perspective to the real estate market in Hawai'i. What sets Joel apart in the real estate arena is his deep-rooted connection to the islands and an authentic appreciation for all that makes Hawai'i unique. Growing up as a kama?a¯ina and having experienced life on the mainland, he possesses a comprehensive understanding of both the local culture and the diverse needs of those seeking properties in paradise.
